HORIZONTAL PRESSURE LEAF FILTERS

Horizontal Pressure Leaf Filters

A) Classification: Depending upon how filters are opened for cleaning they are classified in two types:

a) Shell Retraction: The Horizontal Leaf Filter consists of a Horizontal Cylindrical vessel with special bayonet wedged lock closure & Viton seal. The retractable filter shell is mounted on 4 external wheel assemblies and retraction is accomplished by hydraulic cylinder. All sensitive nozzles are mounted on fixed dish and no need to disconnect any piping during cleaning operation. To open & close wedge lock, filter is equipped with 2 Nos of powerful hydraulic cylinders connected with hydraulic power pack. 5 ply filter leaves construction in SS 316 L / SS 316 with bottom drain nozzles are mounted on central outlet manifold & clamped with common shaft on top for fixing leafs. Once the filtration is completed, the filter is drained & filtered cake is dried with steam. Dried cake is dislodged manually by scrapping after retraction of shell.

b) Leaf Bundle Retraction: The Horizontal Leaf Filter consists of a stationaryhorizontal cylindrical Carbon Steel vessel with special bayonet wedged lock closure & Silicon seal. Leaf bundle moves on rollers riding on tracks with the end of the bundle supported by another set of rollers. To open & close wedge lock, filter is equipped with 2 Nos. powerful hydraulic cylinders connected with hydraulic power pack filter leaves construction in AISI SS 316 L with bottom drain nozzles are mounted on central outlet manifold & clamped with common shaft on top for fixing leafs. Once the filtration is completed, the filter is drained. After draining the filter is opened and the cake is dislodged manually by scrapping after retraction of Leaf Bundle.

B) Filter media - contains set of 5 ply leaves with two fine filter meshes, two
supporting mesh, and drainage mesh, bolted or Revitted, fine filter media in
SS 316 L only.
  For lower micron rating requirement filter leafs are enveloped with filter cloth
of suitable micron rating & material.
• Pre-coating of filter media with Diatomite earth / filter aid results clear filtration.
(As required)
• Cake Drying - Residue/cake can be dried with air, N2, dry steam and dried cake
is directly discharged with help of vibrator or manually scrapped off and can be
collected in hopper/ tray.
• All nozzle connections are mounted on fixed head of filter vessel. To open & to close, the filter vessel during cake discharge no connections have to be disconnected.

D) MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION - Depends on process / client requirement.
 Available MOC - IS 2062, SA 516 Gr. – 60/70, SS 304, SS 316, and SS 316


E) END USERS - HPLF are mainly used for filtration of low solid & High volume filterations Our filters are working for following applications:

1) Dewaxing of Edible Oils.
2) Liquid Glucose
3) Molten Sulphur.
4) Copper Electrolyte Solutions.
5) Fine Chemicals


 Working of Horizontal Pressure Leaf Filters
• Horizontal Pressure leaf filters are used where Vertical design is not convenient.
• Cake is not dislodged easily by Vibrator & to be manually removed.

Normally filters are pre coated with filter Aids. Quantity of filter aid varies as per applications / capacities.

After pre-coating, the liquid to be filtered is pumped in to the filter and subsequently the layer of the particles is formed on surface of leafs and after few minutes of circulation,the clear filtrate outlet is observed.

As filtration proceeds solid gets deposited on leaf surface and the differential pressure increases. Pressure of 3.0 – 3.5 kg/cm2 is maintained inside the filter for effective filtration. Once the filtration is completed, the feed pump is stopped and steam / air / N2 (As process allows) is applied from top of filter without dropping filter pressure to empty hold up material from filters.

 As filter is emptied you can observe drying media flows from outlet. Then hold up from bottom cone is drained and cake is dried by drying media Once cake is dried, filter shell or leaf bundle is retracted. Cake accumulated is dislodged manually by operating Pneumatic Vibrator. Whole operation for cake drying and discharge is completed with in 45 -60 minuets.

If process allows sluice headers with water spray nozzles are provided for cleaning leaf surface.
